electric shadows
(Germany)
Without words
Initially, the company intended to build a machine capable of wrapping and rolling objects around the room, but also capable of creating new spaces.
However, during the course of their work, Melanie Florschütz and Michael Döhnert realised that the movement of a rotating axis alone could transform materials and objects.
‘We were looking for a machine of the imagination, a machine that would create something new and unexpected and trigger a transformation.’
At first glance, nothing seems different from what it really is, until the two performers
begin to tighten invisible screws or calibrate the room to the sound of their tools, transforming it into a sort of machinery with a metal axle at its centre moving slowly and crackling.
The two machinists place everyday objects (a coat, a chair, a bucket) on stage, and they suddenly come to life before our eyes. Everything revolves and changes, even the shadows detach themselves from the objects and move around independently. The magic is created by movement, which reveals the different textures of the materials and transforms the objects as if they were unveiling their previously unseen personalities.

The performance is part of the Art&Puppets Project; an initiative designed to promote a new, “borderless” approach to puppetry and live contemporary art. It is specifically aimed at the cross-border region of Gorizia and Nova Gorica.
The Art&Puppets (ARTPUP) project is funded by the European Union through the GO! 2025 Small Project Fund of the Interreg VI-A Italy-Slovenia 2021-2027 Programme, managed by the EGTC GO.
Learn more about the project
Formed in Berlin in 2004, the company was created when Melanie Florschütz
and Michael Döhnert met. At the heart of their productions for children, they always seek to combine music, puppet theatre, object theatre and acting.
The theme of the show determines the type of staging, always seeking poetry and a variety of genres to engage the audience. The theme of the show determines the type of staging, always seeking poetry and a variety of genres to engage the audience.
Melanie and Michael create and write their shows as a team, together with theatre painter Wolf Dieckmann, costume designer Adelheid Wieser and lighting designer Joachim Fleischer.
“We would have liked to continue watching and enjoying ourselves for a long time. Because with Michael Döhnert and Melanie Florschütz, what happens is always unexpected: objects reveal a sound, develop an independent life, have a soul. Then, the stories mix together, creating a new world. (Anita Grüneis, KULTUR Zeitschrift für Kultur und Gesellschaft, 27 January 2019).
“In this show, we produce moving images. Or rather, we set objects in motion with our imagination so that each spectator sees their own show in their head.“
