mrs rossetta
Without words
Life and dreams, reality and imagination, the present and the memories, good and evil. Perspectives quietly intertwine in this performance, which stands as a reinterpretation of a classic children’s story.
Except that Little Red Riding Hood, the wolf, her mother and her grandmother are all
blended into the silent figure of Mrs Rossetta who, just as she tries to remember her own story, ends up losing it.
Memory lapses come one after another, generating other stories, held together by
music, tradition, and the evocative charm of Sardinia, but also by the numerous objects that re-emerge from the pockets and the memories of the protagonist, bearing the illusion of a more secure memory.

The performance is part of the Art&Puppets Project; an initiative designed to promote a new, “borderless” approach to puppetry and live contemporary art. It is specifically aimed at the cross-border region of Gorizia and Nova Gorica.
The Art&Puppets (ARTPUP) project is funded by the European Union through the GO! 2025 Small Project Fund of the Interreg VI-A Italy-Slovenia 2021-2027 Programme, managed by the EGTC GO.
Learn more about the project
The show is the most recent production by Is Mascareddas, a company founded by Antonio Murru and Donatella Pau in 1980.
The fundamental idea behind their work is that puppet theatre is, in every respect, a theatrical art form with the same dignity as theatre with actors.
From the very beginning, Is Mascareddas has played an important role in spreading and promoting puppet theatre in Sardinia, by conceiving and staging projects, festivals, and seasons with Italian and international companies.
In 1999, it inaugurated the Yorick Library, one of the most important collections of texts and documents on animation and puppet theatre in Europe, thanks to its collection of approximately 4,000 volumes, books, and magazines from all over the world.
«Ms Rossetta is one of those characters I happen to meet in the day centres or nursing homes I am lucky enough to visit. Many people think they are only places of sadness and illness, but they are overflowing with life experience, with a desire to meet people, with humanity. Working with Donatella Pau and Tomasella Calvisi on the music, it was inevitable that we would encounter Sardinia with its ancient heritage rich in traditions, colours, atmospheres and charm. We did not deliberately seek it out, but it emerged in a very natural and organic way between the lines of the story, in the actions of the show, in what one sees and hears»
