hakanai
(France)
Without words
In Japanese, Hakanai means fragile, evanescent, transitory, something that lies between dream and reality. This ancient word captures the elusive nature of the human condition and its precariousness.
Hakanaï is a haiku dance performance that takes place in a cube of moving images,
projected live by a digital performer who draws on the imaginary realm of dreams, playing with their structure and substance.
The box changes its function from time to time: a bedroom where, once the barrier of sleep has been overcome, the walls dissolve and open up to a new interior space; a cage whose limits have to be constantly tested; a space where the impossible becomes possible and where all physical references and certainties are made questionable.
Four projectors reveal a constantly evolving graphic universe on the tulle, a sort of digital score with which the dancer’s body comes into symbiosis: and at the end of the
performance the audience itself can wander among the moving images and interact with them.

The performance is part of the Art&Puppets Project; an initiative designed to promote a new, “borderless” approach to puppetry and live contemporary art. It is specifically aimed at the cross-border region of Gorizia and Nova Gorica.
The Art&Puppets (ARTPUP) project is funded by the European Union through the GO! 2025 Small Project Fund of the Interreg VI-A Italy-Slovenia 2021-2027 Programme, managed by the EGTC GO.

In Japanese, Hakanai means “ temporary, fragile, evanescent, transitory and fluctuating”, something that lies between dream and reality. This word of ancient origins also encapsulates the elusive aspect of the human condition, poised between precariousness and roots firmly planted in the ground. It is written by combining the graphic symbols that represent “man” and “dream”. This association of symbols is the starting point for a dancer who is confronted with images that reveal what lies on the border between imagination and
